When can I use the hard shoulder?
The hard shoulder is the lane next to the carriageway, which can only be used by the emergency services and the police.
If you drive on the hard shoulder, you are breaking the Highway Code and can receive a fine of from Euro 370 to Euro 1,485.
Ten points are taken off your licence and you are banned for 2 to 6 months.
You can use the hard shoulder to reach a motorway exit only when there is a lot of traffic and if you are 500 metres or less from the exit.
Do not occupy the hard shoulder when you join the motorway or when traffic is heavy. Wait for the traffic to thin out and join your lane.
