When can you use lay-bys?
Lay-bys should only be used in real emergencies, if a vehicle breaks down or the driver or passenger suddenly feels unwell.
Only stay in a lay-by for as long as it takes to sort out your problem.
If possible, stay in your car.
If you get out, do so only after you have put on a high visibility vest.
Stay on the right-hand side of the guard rail, out of danger from oncoming cars.
